My mail servers support POP3 and IMAP . Because I'm using multiple clients nowadays, including webmail, Mutt, and Outlook 2003, I changed my Outlook config from POP3 to IMAP. Oops.
Outlook's support for IMAP is lacking a couple of features. Yes, it basically works, but here's what it won't do:
Use the Deleted Items folder
Use the Junk E-mail folder
Auto-purge deleted messages
Default to an IMAP inbox on launch
Auto-purge messages when moved from online to offline folders
I tried Thunderbird about 6 months ago, and it wasn't bad. But I use MS Outlook 2003 at home for a variety of reasons, mostly for:
Solid Integration - I drag-and-drop Emails, Contacts, and Calendar Items between each other frequently
Performance - I was shocked to see how fast Outlook runs when it isn't burdended by a connection to a corporate Exchange server - Outlook ran faster than Thunderbird on my machine
Support by External apps - Outlook is still the only PIM and Email client that will synchronize properly with my Clie's Address Book, Calendar, To-Do List, Memos, and Iambic Mail (now called Agendus Mail), and is the only PIM that will sync with my Sony T616 phone via bluetooth (using the Widcomm software provided with my D-LInk bluetooth dongle)
At this point, I'm pretty much stuck with Outlook, and hoping someone at Microsoft decides to care about the problems.
Might be time to take a peek at Thunderbird again. Or maybe just stick with good ole' Mutt!
