I've tuned the service menu and user menu settings for my Samsung HL-R4667W [samsung1080i, samsunghlr4667wservicemenu, samsunghlr4667w, samsungpronto, samsunghlr4667wsettings, exchangesamsung] a hundred times, and changed nearly every value. At the end of the day, however, I only needed to make a few adjustments to get a great picture.
Service Menu Settings:
GAMMA: 0
Sub Contrast: 80
(CCA) D-White-X: 313
(CCA) D-White-Y: 329
User Menu Settings:
Picture Mode: Standard (Movie is also good, but seems to boost black levels a bit, revealing slightly more DLP dithering)
Sharpness: 0
Color Temperature: Warm1
Digital NR: On for Component Inputs, Off for OTA and HDMI
I'll keep this entry up-to-date if (when!) I make future changes.
These are your current settings still? I have the same settings as you do but It feels to dark and dull. Is there a reference for all the service menu options, because there are just too many to know whats happening.
I noticed you said in another blog to force 1080i out of the comcast HDSTB, how do you do this, I want to try it, I think Comcast is compressing the digital stream 3 times and turning it to analog in the process, even though I use component.
Yes, I'm still using these settings. In daylight, it does look a bit dim, but at night it looks perfect to me. That said, I have not calibrated this with any measuring equipment other than the Avia disk and several DVDs, so I might be off a bit. I happen to like it for my room, but your room might need different results.
I couldn't find a proper reference for the service menu settings anywhere. According to someone on http://avsforum.com, even the official service manual descriptions are useless. But luckily, out of the factory, most all settings are very good, with the exception of black levels and intensity (aka Brightness and Contrast), and the White Point setting.
To get the Comcast box to output 1080i, turn it off with the power button on the front of the box, wait a minute or so, then press the Menu button on the front. You should see a settings screen. Use the arrow buttons on the front of the box to set the output resolution. I think you press Menu again to save the settings, or maybe just power it back up.
It looks like it was defaulted at 1080i. Ive been watching a ton of different HD content in 1080i and 720p. I cant tell a huge difference in the quality of the resolution. But I can see some dithering. Blacks areas have a scale and pixelation to them, not sure what to call it. Other areas too, like peoples necks/faces. I dont know if it is a DLP problem, the Comcast HDSTB compression problem or what. It happens a little on the xbox 360 also though.
You also said the internal scaler on the 360 is ATI. Both the TV's scaler and the 360 is ATI then? The 360 can eventually output hdmi with a new custom hdmi plug right? I read this: http://xe360.com/article/Xbox_360_Accessories/3768.html and was just wondering, a lot of speculation about that. Its December 2, and no HDMI cable or talk about it.
That black dithering is the one thing I dislike about the Sammy. The DLP in this model can't do deep blacks very well, so dark colors dither. The further you sit from the set, the less you'll see the dithering. My sofa is about 5.5 feet from the 46" Sammy. If I lean forward, I see dithering. If I lean back, I don't.
All that said, I have noticed that the better the source, the less dithering I see. I rarely see it on my Oppo DVD player.
I'm not sure Microsoft will ever release an HDMI cable for the 360, as that will force them to enable HDCP
, per license deals with the movie studios. But if you want to see upscaled DVD output from the 360, you can use the Microsoft VGA cable adapter. I haven't tried it myself, but I've heard good reports so far.
